Empowering a community by investing in the lives of children and families
Anchor Children’s Ministry (ACM ) exists to serve the children and families of Juárez, Mexico, by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and meeting vital community needs. Two schools serve Juárez through ACM: Colegio James R. Ganley, grades K-6, and Colegio S. Parker Gamwell, grades 7-9. Gilbert and Maria Garcia have been full-time missionaries to Juárez since 2002 with the school school starting in 2005. With a team of staff and teachers, they facilitate the daily details of running two schools, serving as leaders of the church that meets on the school grounds each week, running after-school activities, and reaching out to families in the community who have various needs. The two schools are located in one of the poorest areas of Juárez. It is common for children to drop out of school, which often leads to teenage pregnancy, drug use, unemployment, and poverty. This cycle then continues to the next generation. Through the support available to children and their families through Anchor Children’s Ministry, individuals and families have the tools they need to break this cycle. More importantly, they are introduced to the life-changing love of Jesus Christ and are discipled in walking with Him.
Colegio James R. Ganley (Elementary School)
Colegio Ganley began in 2004 with grades K-3 and added a grade each year until it was at full capacity with grades K-6. Students at Ganley attend school at no cost, in contrast to fees required at public schools in the community, thanks to American sponsors. Students receive their daily education, meals, uniforms, and all school supplies through sponsorships. Parents of students who attend Ganley must complete weekly volunteer hours in lieu of any fees, thus bringing the entire family into the community of Colegio Ganley. Parents often help in the office or classrooms, cook school lunches, decorate or facilitate special events, and clean the school. Students receive a top-notch education that prepares them for junior high and high school. The spiritual support students receive prepares them to be lights to the world around them and to choose to live in a way pleasing to the Lord.
Colegio S. Parker Gamwell (Junior High)
Colegio Gamwell, which shares a campus with Colegio Ganley, first opened in 2017. Junior high is a vulnerable time for youth in Juárez. School fees increase, making it more difficult for families to send all their children to school. Social pressures also increase, making it difficult for youth to avoid the influences of drugs, gangs, and other negative pressures. Colegio Gamwell has given young people a safe place to be mentored by Christian teachers, remain involved in a nurturing community, and obtain the education and skills they need to succeed in high school. Families of junior high students pay a reasonable tuition fee. Small class sizes allow teachers to meet students’ individual needs and to disciple them in their relationships with Jesus.
